In a first for the state, Dr. Patel and his team at Kiran Hospital, Surat performed Gujarat's first hand transplant, a feat of vascularised composite allotransplantation demanding the connection of bone, vessels, nerves and tendons under the microscope. Six patients have since received successful hand transplants under his care, as covered in regional and national press.

Wrap the amputated part in clean, moist gauze, seal it in a plastic bag, place the bag on ice (never directly on the part), and call the emergency line at 98980 38191 immediately. Replantation is time-critical; earlier surgery improves the chance of success.
